FOMC Decision & Dot Plot — Wednesday, September 16 The Week’s Defining Event

With CME FedWatch pricing roughly 86.5% odds of a hike, the decision itself may carry less information than the accompanying Summary of Economic Projections. Whether the dot plot signals a one-and-done move or the start of a renewed tightening cycle will do more to shape metals’ direction into October than the hike itself.

Saudi East-West Pipeline & Hormuz — Does the Oil Shock Extend?

The attack on Saudi Arabia’s Petroline — its main alternative to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz represents a meaningful escalation beyond the Strait itself. With Brent already above $100 for the first time in nearly four months and Tehran-neighbor diplomatic talks now postponed, further attacks on regional energy infrastructure would keep inflation risk elevated right as the Fed debates its next move.

Bank of Japan — Thursday-Friday, September 17-18

The BOJ meets this week and is widely expected to raise its policy rate to 1.25% from 1.00%, a move that would tighten global dollar-funding conditions further just as the Fed is separately expected to hike. A hawkish surprise from either side could compound pressure on precious metals via the yen-carry-trade unwind channel.

Bank of England — Thursday, September 17

The BOE decides the same day as the BOJ and is expected to hold at 3.75%. A synchronized reading across three major central banks this week Fed, BOJ, and BOE will offer the clearest signal yet on whether the global tightening cycle is broadening or nearing its end.

US Refined-Copper Tariff — Formal Clarity Still Pending

Washington’s reported delay on the tariff decision was the single biggest driver of copper’s reversal from its record high. Any formal confirmation, further delay, or outright reversal this week would likely trigger the next sharp move in the metal, given how much of the recent price action has been a policy story rather than a physical one.
